Omaha, Neb. -- Creighton Baseball head coach Ed Servais and Associate Head Coach/Coach-in-Waiting Mark Kingston announced the addition of Billy Mohl and Mike Current as Bluejay Assistant Coaches on Tuesday, July 2. Mohl will be Creighton's Pitching Coach, while Current will work with hitters as well as recruiting.

Mohl spent the previous seven seasons as the head coach of South Florida (2018-24), while Current worked with Kingston at South Carolina as the Director of Player Development and as an Assistant Coach throughout his time with the Gameco*cks.

"We are very pleased to have this kind of experience," noted Servais. "Billy has been working with pitchers for over 20 years and Mike has been involved with hitters and the recruiting process for a very long time as well. Their experience is going to be very valuable as we prepare in the fall and throughout the season."

Mohl and Current both have a long history with Kingston, spanning back to 2009 at Illinois State. Kingston and Current worked as assistants on the 2009 staff at Illinois State. The following season Kingston hired Mohl and retained Current for his initial staff as head coach for the Redbirds in 2010. The trio worked as a unit for five seasons with Illinois State, then the trio went to South Florida beginning in 2015, guiding the Bulls program for three seasons. When Kingston accepted the head coaching role at South Carolina in 2018, Current joined him in Columbia. Mohl, meanwhile, was elevated to the head coach role at South Florida for the last seven seasons.

"During my time at Illinois State I learned about the rich baseball tradition at Creighton. Coach Servais has won a ton of games and has had the utmost success," said Mohl. "Once Coach Kingston was hired the opportunity to reunite with both him as well as Mike helped recharge my batteries and I'm excited to get started."

"This will be the 17th consecutive season working with Coach Kingston, which I think speaks volumes to how we have been able to work together and what I think of him as a boss and person," said Current. "Creighton has always been a place I've admired from the outside. I have a ton of respect for what the program has accomplished and am beyond excited about its potential moving forward. Creighton's combination of an outstanding academic reputation and arguably the best facility in all of college baseball made it really attractive to me and to potential recruits."

At the helm for USF, Mohl led the Bulls to the NCAA Tournament in both 2018 and again in 2021. He compiled a record of 174-187-1 over seven seasons. A 2021 NCAA Tournament run was a the highlight of his career as South Florida won the American Athletic Conference Tournament, then earned the programs first Super Regional appearance by winning the Gainesville Regional. Entering the Regional as the four seed, South Florida defeated host Florida, then bested Miami to advance to the championship round. South Florida dropped the first meeting with South Alabama, before posting a 6-4 win to advance to a Super Regional battle with Texas.

Under Mohl's tutelage 16 USF pitchers were drafted and fivehave made the major leagues, including Shane McClanahan (a 2018 first-rounder by the Tampa Bay Rays), who finished seventh in the 2021 American League Rookie of the Year voting and is a two-time MLB All-Star.

Mohl led one of the nation's top pitching staffs that saw two arms selected in the 2018 MLB Draft with first-rounder McClanahan and closer Andrew Perez (eighth round). USF's pitchers finished fifth nationally with 10 strikeouts per nine innings and 581 total strikeouts, the fourth-consecutive season the team reached 500 K's. Mohl was also part of two additional NCAA Tournament teams at USF, as he served as Mark Kingston's pitching coach from 2015-17. Prior to Mohl's first season with the Bulls in 2015, the program had secured 500 strikeouts in a season just once.

Current worked with the outfielders at South Carolina, including Carlos Cortes, who had 15 home runs and 44 RBI and was drafted in the third round of the 2018 MLB First-Year Player Draft by the New York Mets, and TJ Hopkins, who was picked in the ninth round of the 2019 draft by Cincinnati. The Carolina outfielders also combined for 15 assists in 2018, led by Cortes' seven.

Current helped South Florida reach a pair of NCAA Tournaments. In 2017, USF hit .287 as a team, with three players averaging over .330. Shortstop Kevin Merrell led the Bulls and The American Athletic Conference with a .383 average. Merrell was selected 33rd overall in the MLB Amateur Draft by the Oakland Athletics. During the 2016 season, the Bulls belted 36 home runs, the most for the team since 2010. USF also posted 66 stolen bases, giving the Bulls a two-year total of 140, the highest two-year stolen base total since 2002-03.

He was instrumental in helping the Bulls to a consensus top-10 recruiting class in the fall of 2015 (No. 5 by Perfect Game, No. 7 according to D1Baseball.com, No. 8 ranking by Baseball America and No. 9 from Collegiate Baseball), the program's first ever top-25 recruiting class. Current arrived at USF after playing a major role in the transformation of the Illinois State University program during a nine-year stint in Normal. Over his final five seasons, Illinois State racked up 173 wins and picked up a pair of Missouri Valley Conference regular season championships, an MVC tournament title and twice set the program's record for wins.
