Depending on your choices, some of these non-origin characters will be locked out from being recruited (such as being unable to recruit Minsc without Jaheira).

What are Companions?
Recruitable Characters For Your Party
Companions are recruitable characters for your party and will aid you in combat, as well as accompany you throughout your journey in the game.
Each of them is set with a specific class along with their own personality, preferences, approvals, and dislikes. They will also provide insights based on the situation at hand through dialogue choices and social interactions.
Total of 10 Companions
There are a total of 10 companions that you'll meet in Baldur's Gate 3. 6 of them are Origin characters and 4 are Non-Origin characters.
Maximum of 3 Companions in a Party
You can only have a maximum of 3 companions in your party, so it's advisable to create a group with varying roles based on the combat utilities that each one offers.
For companions that you've met but have yet to add them to your group, they will remain at camp until you ask them to join you in your adventures. Take note that you cannot swap and change companions when you are not at your camp.
