We are reinvigorating our Phase One campaign to support our provincial bargaining team. Please feel warmly invited to participate in one of our upcoming Burma Shaves on March 3 on 100th Avenue near 152 Street and March 5 on 152 in front of Eagle Quest (at 78th). This is our chance to garner public support, or at least honks, in our quest for a fair contract. All events will run approximately from 3:15 pm to 4:15 pm.

You could also organize a BURMA shave in front of your school, please contact Julia directly at [emailprotected], you can borrow the signs!

Marking in the Malls

3:00 pm to 5:30 pm each date

Surrey Teachers - bring your marking or prep, share a coffee or snack, and have conversations with colleagues. We are hosting a public show of collegiality and solidarity as the massive amounts of marking and prep are usually done alone in classrooms or at home where it is not visible to the public

You can stay for the whole time, or only part of it and possibly enjoy some relaxing shopping.

When you arrive, check with the STA organizer at the site and we'll buy your coffee or snack!

We are working to also make plans at City Central and Willowbrook Mall. More details to follow.

50% Discount on #RedforBCED items!

We have been very impressed by the staff who have taken the initiative to order their own #RedforBCED apparel. Recently, the STA Executive passed a motion that would subsidize staff 50% of the cost of

#RedforBCED apparel (up to $15 per item) to help encourage Surrey teachers to wear red on

Wednesdays. This motion is retroactive to the 2019-2020 school year. Please send your original receipts to [emailprotected] or through the courier to #000 using this form:

https://www.surreyteachers.org/wp-content/uploads/2020/02/Expense-voucher-2019-20-Red-for-Ed- reimbursem*nts.pdf

Surrey teachers, please send us photos and videos of your staff wearing their red, holding walk-ins, burma shaves, and any other acts of solidarity. Let us know if we can help support you in any way. We need a fair deal that includes better working and learning conditions, and fair salaries!

We Fondly Remember Former Surrey Teacher and STA President Brian Porter

After graduating from Simon Fraser University, Brian became an elementary school teacher in the Surrey School District, was president of the Surrey Teachers Association from 1984 to 1986 and later taught English and Social Studies at the high school level before spending the last 20 years of his career working in the bargaining division of the BCTF. Brian dedicated many countless hours of his career to championing teachers' rights. He was crucial to the successful constitutional challenge to the class size legislation imposed by the government.

Join the Young Worker Committee!

Are you under 35 and interested and looking to connect with other Young Teachers?

If so, consider joining the newly formed STA Young Worker Committee. The YWC is looking for driven people to help plan social events to bring young workers together and create meaningful connections. We plan to hold a number of events and engage in opportunities both locally and with other unionized young workers to build leadership, capacity, and solidarity.

Whether you’re a TTOC, a Contract Teacher, or somewhere in the middle, if you’re under 35 you’re more than welcome to join the table and have your voice heard. If interested contact Rick Kumar at

[emailprotected]. Our first meeting will be March 3rd from 4-6pm at the STA Office (9030 King George Blvd, Surrey, BC V3V 7Y3).

Attention TOCs!

Have you ever arrived to a classroom only to discover that there is no day plan? Are you looking to add more resources to your TOC toolkit for those days when you’re not quite sure what to do? Join your TTOC committee on March 6th for an afternoon of resource-sharing and mingling. Bring one resource to share with your colleagues and collect a few for your own toolkit! Snacks will be provided.

This week’s shout out is from Eric So to Kim Buchanan:

“I would like to send a shout out to Kim Buchanan. Kim Buchanan works tirelessly for the SEAS executive as the president. She is the ultimate pro at planning ultimate tournaments and playday for the all the elementary schools in the district. In addition, she is the most amazing teacher. Her students are extremely lucky to have her as a teacher.”

Thank you Eric, you and Kim are now entered into our monthly draw for a $25 Indigo! gift certificate.

Please submit your “shout outs” to Angela via [emailprotected] to spread thekindness around our local and for your chance to win a gift card too!
